WRONGPLACE is a non-profit research collective founded by a group of enthusiastic and like-minded professionals from different specialties, committed to investigating the interlacing conditions between visual culture, contemporary art and new media practices and theories. It is not an “institution” per se, but a research group, an experimental laboratory, an academic studio, a network, or a flexible and continuously evolving exhibition organism, hoping to reawaken our sense of curiosity and bringing completely new perspectives to the table.

WRONGPLACE emphasizes “new art, new space, for new generation”. It is a place for interdisciplinary discussions, a place to ask (wrong) questions, and a place of discovery and critique. We attempt to connect people of ideas and action, to generate new forms of production, and to explore and present current changes in the global art scene. With a remarkable openness to the artwork, we endeavor to reexamine the definition of “exhibition”, and use it as a mode of questioning and expanding the boundaries of artistic and curatorial practices under a local context.

WRONGPLACE is a title borrowed from an article written by Miwon Kwon, an American art historian and theorist. For Kwon, the wrong place is generally thought of as a place where one feels one does not belong: unfamiliar, disorientating, destabilising, even threatening. But what curators Okwui Enwezor and Lu Jie revealed was the possibility that a sense of the “wrong place” could expose the instability of the “right place”. Rather than choosing sides between “wrong" and "right", there is an underlying urgency to question: What is a "wrong" place? How does one recognize it as such, as opposed to a "right" place?

WRONGPLACE can be understood as somewhere adventurous that we want to go, but have not yet arrived. It represents a metaphor, an attitude, which stimulates us to embrace risk (failure) and let it take us to someplace good in the future.
